Malaysia Race Report

Disappointment in Melbourne victory in Sepang Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen storm to victory at yesterday's 10th Malaysian Grand Prix.

Ferrari were set for a one-two finish before Felipe Massa spin on lap 31 left him stuck in the gravel. Robert Kubica finished the race 19.57 secs behind Raikkonen, followed by
third placed McLaren-Mercedes driver Hekki Kovalainen who scored his second consecutive
podium finish.

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton did not have a great weekend following his win at Melbourne, a 5 spot penalty causing him to start 9th on the grid he later made up some
positions but then a poor pit stop demolished his chance to get on the podium.

This was a great race from the Toyota team Jarno Trulli finished 4th just missing out on the last podium place. "I really wanted this fourth place for the team and me. We did a great job, and I dedicate this result entirely to the team."

Apple Plans To Enter The Corporate Market

Apple plans to take on RIM's BlackBerry in a bid to increase the market share of its popular iPhone by releasing software to make the iPhone compatibile with the Microsoft's Outlook email program and improving the general security of the phone. Other problems also include a more intuitive keyboard software allows for faster messaging and typing of emails, something the BlackBerry with its built it QWERTY keypad already offers. Given Apple's reputation with the consumer market, it's going to be interesting to see how they take on the corporate world.

Steve Jobs has never been much for suits, wearing them or selling to them. His own fashion taste leans to jeans and mock turtlenecks, and almost all of the products created by Apple since his return to the company a decade ago are aimed at consumers.

But now Jobs wants to go corporate. On Mar. 6, at its Cupertino campus, Apple is expected to announce a strategy to use its Web-browsing iPhone to move into the corporate market. Apple will likely unveil plans to spur development of more software for the phone, to improve security on the device, and to make it compatible with popular e-mail systems such as Microsoft's ubiquitous Outlook. Such steps may make corporations more willing to approve the iPhone for use by their employees. The moves will put Apple into direct competition with Research In Motion, whose BlackBerry devices now dominate the wireless e-mail market.

Gigabyte shows off non-reference GeForce 8800 GT and Radeon HD 3800

Gigabyte has recently left the doors open in order to get its upcoming graphics cards into the spotlight. The cards prepped for their 15 minutes of fame are two non-reference models of the GeForce 8800 GT and what is probably the upcoming Radeon HD 3850. The two cards feature a blue-colored PCB and come with a Zalman cooler. The GV-NX88T512HP aka the 8800 card also boasts solid capacitors and a three-phase power regulation for enhanced overclocking capabilities while the GV-RX2950P512 which should really be renamed to something like GV-RX3850... comes with similar features.

Both cards are set to be released in about one month and apparently will not have a price premium.

Sneak Peek: AMD's Phenom Quad-Cores, Spider Graphics Platform

Advanced Micro Devices is getting set to launch its first quad-core desktop processor and accompanying Spider platform for high-performance desktop systems. The specific details are under lock and key until the release date, but we can tell you that Spider is coming sooner than earlier reports indicated, and it's the first desktop platform from AMD that was built from the ground up in concert with the chipmaker's graphics division, ATI.
We also feel comfortable saying that, from a strictly fanboy perspective, it's pretty awesome.

The Spider release will coincide with AMD's launch of its Phenom quad-core desktop processor. That's no accident, as the platform was built to integrate Phenom with a new series of GPUs and chipsets from ATI that will be released alongside the new CPU. AMD acquired the maker of graphic processors, chipsets and video display cards last October.

Oh, and one quick note, in case you missed it -- Phenom isn't a codename. It's the name of the new brand AMD is launching with these quad-core chips.

Phenom's specs are impressive. It will come as no surprise that the chip's "native" quad-core design bears desktop fruit similar to what AMD's recently-launched quad-core Opteron processor does for servers. We're talking energy efficiency, high floating points for memory-intensive applications and easy switch-a-roos from dual-core Athlons to the new quad-cores. Though it's a bit apples-and-oranges, it's also worth noting that the first Phenoms to hit the market will have higher clock speeds than the initial shipments of quad-core Opterons.

All very tasty, though AMD's stress on performance-per-watt for Phenom did strike us as a bit odd. It's one thing to highlight Opteron's energy efficiency for the data centers, but don't those crazy gamers actually get a kick out of burning through more fuel than necessary? AMD's response: True, gamers aren't the most power-stingy customers around, let alone the Greenest. But better energy efficiency is still a good sell, because it means fewer fans, which means more headroom in gaming shells for system builders to drop in more gear.

So there.

While Phenom will be available as a processor-in-a-box, and ATI's new products don't require a quad-core processor, by combining all that good stuff on an optimized platform, AMD banks on hitting the enthusiast and high-end home theater markets hard ahead of the holidays.

The new ATI gear fills a hole in AMD's DirectX 10-compatible Radeon line, in the $200 neighborhood. It will also support DirectX 10.1, when that multimedia/gaming interface update ships with the first Windows Vista Service Pack in January. Also look for boosts in ATI's PCI Express, CrossFire and AVIVO HD technology, as well as a brand new chipset family for Phenom called the AMD 700 series.

And overclockers have something to look forward to as well, thanks to a little surprise AMD has built into Spider.

Spider is already in the hands of some partners in AMD's system builder channel. When you get a chance to see it demoed, it's tough to wipe the silly grin off your face as the platform roars into action. Spider is geared towards gaming, and the way it handles lighting, angles and texture is all very impressive. This reporter's gaming tastes run to the vintage life-draining genre, but in the unlikely event a Spider platform was ever wasted on me, the world could very well see the most balls-to-the-wall game of Minesweeper ever played.

A new free-to-join website will allow PC games to be played on a PlayStation 3 console, the CEO behind the new venture is claiming.

Richard Faria from www.streammygame.com states his site will revolutionise the gaming industry by providing members with a free plug-in that converts games into IPTV channels called Game Streams.

The site will enable games to be played remotely by sending it over a home network to a laptop or a second PC, and the firm claims the receiving machine will play the game "without any lag and it does not need to have the game installed".

"We are embarking on a new paradigm in the gaming industry fuelled by advances in computer hardware, network speeds and the want of gamers to have more freedom," said Richard Faria CEO. "We network the power of their main PC so it can be used to play high end games on other PCs and laptops around the home. I believe the demand for high resolutions will drive the sales of high end PC hardware.

"We will release a Linux version in Q4 2007 which will enable PC games to be played on the PlayStation 3 and many other devices including DVD players, set top boxes, networked media devices and mobile phones."

Currently compatible with Windows XP and Vista, the firm claims it will work with all games based on Microsoft's DirectX8, 9 and 10, including new releases such as FIFA 08 and BioShock.
