Microsoft fixes Windows Vista Office 2007 patch issues

Microsoft has admitted that users of Microsoft Office 2007 on Windows Vista missed out on some of the security patches released this month, as its security update services had failed to deploy the fixes. But the software giant has addressed the problem with the release of a new update.

“We have updated the detection logic for the May 8th security and non-security updates for Office 2007,” said Mark Griesi, a program manager with the Microsoft Security Response Center (MSRC), in an entry on the team’s blog.

“In some cases, the original detection logic may not have offered the updates or the updates may not have been installed successfully on systems running Windows Vista.”

The updates that may not have been deployed two weeks ago included ones for Excel 2007 and Office 2007 in general. All were rated “important,” the second-highest ranking in Microsoft’s four-level threat system.

Administrators of Windows Vista will see new versions of the updates and will need to approve them.

“If you have already successfully installed the updates using Microsoft Update, you will not be offered the update again,” Griesi said.

Aside from Microsoft Update service, updates are also available through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Systems Management Server (SMS) and Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU).

Griesi urged users to run Windows Update or WSUS again to guarantee that Office 2007 is up to date.

Vista not really helping PC sales

Scottsdale (AZ) - Although Microsoft wants consumers to believe that Vista has reinvigorated the computer market, research firm In-Stat says it really has no impact at all.

"System sales that had been muted waiting for systems pre-loaded with Vista rather than XP are expected to work through sales channels in the next two quarters," said In-Stat analyst Ian Lao. "However, these sales represent an offset from last year rather than actual new demand creation."

In other words, the long-term expectations have not changed in the wake of Vista's launch. In-Stat predicts 300 million PCs to be sold in 2009, the same number it predicted when Windows XP was still the most recent OS.

Microsoft announced at this month's WinHEC keynote that over 40 million copies of Vista had already been sold, but skeptics have questioned that number, and it's unclear how many of those were pre-installed on new computers and how many of the upper tier versions of the OS were sold.

In-Stat told TG Daily that while it does not question Microsoft's sales figures, it does not believe in its assertions that Vista will cause any kind of "unexpected surge" in PC purchasing.

In-Stat says the only real winner from the release of Vista is going to be memory manufacturers, which it says are likely to see around a 20% year-to-year revenue increase through the end of the decade.

Blizzard Announcement: StarCraft(R) II Unveiled

Blizzard Entertainment(R) Announces Highly Anticipated Sequel at 2007 Worldwide Invitational Event in South Korea

SEOUL, South Korea--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Blizzard Entertainment® today unveiled StarCraft® II, the sequel to its award-winning real-time strategy game StarCraft, at the 2007 Blizzard Worldwide Invitational event in Seoul, South Korea. The announcement took place inside the Olympic Gymnastics Arena, in front of thousands of attendees, who received a presentation that included a StarCraft II cinematic trailer and a gameplay demonstration by the development team.

Designed to be the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game, StarCraft II will feature the return of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg races, overhauled and re-imagined with Blizzard's signature approach to game balance. Each race will be further distinguished from the others, with several new units and new gameplay mechanics, as well as new abilities for some of the classic StarCraft units that will be making a reappearance in the game. StarCraft II will also feature a custom 3D-graphics engine with realistic physics and the ability to render several large, highly detailed units and massive armies on-screen simultaneously.

"With StarCraft II, we'll be able to do everything we wanted to do with the original StarCraft and more," stated Mike Morhaime, president and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "We recognize that expectations are high following the long-running popularity of the original game, but we plan to meet those expectations and deliver an engaging, action-packed, competitive experience that StarCraft players and strategy gamers worldwide will enjoy."

StarCraft II will include a unique single-player campaign, as well as fast-paced online play through an upgraded version of Blizzard's renowned online gaming service, Battle.net®. In addition, the game will come with a powerful, full-featured map editor that will put the same tools used by Blizzard's designers into the hands of players.

Blizzard is developing StarCraft II for simultaneous release on the Windows® and Macintosh® PC platforms. Further information about the game, including details on the single-player, multiplayer, and map-editor features, as well as system requirements, pricing, and availability, will be announced in the months ahead. The game's expansion set, StarCraft: Brood War, also released in 1998, is still considered by many to be one of the best add-on products ever created. To date, the series has sold more than 9.5 million copies worldwide.* StarCraft's gritty sci-fi universe has also spawned numerous complementary products, including several novels and action figures, as well as a pen-and-paper role-playing game.

Pirates release fully cracked Vista install

A widely available release, located at the usual pirate havens, from a scene group entitled 'NoPE' (which doesn't appear to have released much else) has quickly become the most highly sought-after asset of eye-patched, peg-legged, shoulder-mounted-parrot pirate types.

The NoPE release has a major key difference to other previous pirated copies of Vista - it is completely cracked, the product appears activated, updates work, and no key needs to be entered, straight from the installation media without any effort on the part of the pirate.

Fake XP Re-Activation

What's worse than having to re-activate Windows XP? How about a fake re-activation that steals your credit card information! Takashi Katsuki, a Symantec researcher has posted a note about a rather devious Trojan that they're calling Kardphisher. It's no great shakes technically, but it has a very convincing appearance.

When you reboot an infested system you get a highly realistic-looking warning from "Microsoft Piracy Control". It states that someone else has used your activation code; to prove you're the legitimate owner you must re-activate and provide a credit card number. If you click "No, I will do it later", then boom! The system shuts down. But if you proceed you'll get another very realistic form asking for billing information. It even asks for the code printed on the back of your credit card. Suppose you do get suspicious and decide not to activate - your computer shuts down. Nasty!

According to Symantec, if you've kept your Norton AntiVirus definitions up to date you're not at risk. But if you do find this Trojan has weaseled onto your system, I'm not sure yet what you can do about it. Symantec's detailed removal instructions all involve performing specific tasks at your computer. If you can't start it up, you can't follow those instructions. I'm guessing that you can get away with entering fake billing information just so you can get access to the computer. But I'm not sure! Final advice from Katsuki - follow Fox Mulder's maxim and Trust No One. (Cue the X-Files theme...).
